Historically known for supplying fine silk sarees to the royalty, this place houses a number of shops dealing in silk sarees, textiles, gold and silver as well as steel and brassware. Here’s how to make the most of this goldmine of a market.

Things you can buy

Chickpet market is a  paradise for those who seek innovation and creativity. You can get clothes across price  ranges and varieties, but you need to have the patience to look for it.  Haggling is a  mandatory skill for  this market. An entire wardrobe can be  bought  for Rs. 300, a pair of denims for Rs. 150 and a tee for a mere Rs. 40.

You can also buy electronics, home dcor items, garments, blankets and other stuff with minimum damage to your pocket.

You can pick  cheap gym wear  from here, and some solid gym accessories at throwaway prices, such as  a  dumbbell for as little as Rs. 75. Want some music? Buy a  music system for a mere Rs. 1,000. Want to pick up some utensils? You  can  buy  a  kilo for Rs. 160 and a mixer Rs. 700. (Unbelievable, we know!)

Silk sarees

With several saree stores, Chickpet is the right place to head to if you are planning to buy some beautiful silk embroidered sarees. Kanjivaram, Poochampalli or Banaras silk, your wish is their command.  It is the ultimate go-to shopping place to buy wedding trousseau that fits your budget perfectly!  The quality of the silk sarees is not compromised on and they are priced quite reasonably.

If buying some affordable gold and silverware is what you have on mind, a visit to the Chickpet market will not disappoint you. For the budget-conscious, a number of shops also deal in beautiful gold-plated ornaments.

For those who have just moved into a new accommodation, this place is godsend you can buy stainless steel utensils at wholesale prices here. Besides, a number of stores also deal with a wide array of handicrafts and other brassware.

Fancy Store

One of the most beloved stores of the ladies, it caters to the needs of every middle-class female. Even the most basic necessities like bindis, safety pins, bangles and rubber bands can be found here (all adhering to the latest fashion trends, mind you). You get the perfect imitation of branded nail colours and gun-metal jewellery  here at throwaway prices. Everything that belongs in a womans closet and dressing table is available here. Also,  to prevent your little kids from getting into the way of your shopping spree, they keep games, bats and balls too.

This is one place where women can enjoy the sweet pleasures of a hearty haggle. You get the perfect replicas of brands like MAC and Lakme here,  at a  tenth of the price (also some of their very own brands like Beebok and Adibas). For women who are tired of the mercilessly priced big brands with sky high prices, this is the store to visit!


Most shops in Chickpet remain open from 10 am to 9 pm every day.  We would suggest that you leave early to avoid the crowd and the heat. You can,  however,  get good bargaining rates during closing time.  

How to reach

Take a bus till the Majestic bus stop. The market is walking distance from there.  It  is also  in close proximity  of the  Bengaluru City railway station.

Tip: Do not take your car as parking space is really limited.  (Also,  the streets are so narrow that it is almost impossible to navigate by car.)

Temples in Chickpet

The market has a number of temples in its vicinity. In the narrow lanes of the busy Chickpet area, the pristine white Jain temple belonging to the Shwethambara sect stands out amidst the crammed concrete structures. The Adinath temple, which was earlier made of wood, is now all marble. The shrine has ornamental detailing and designing ranging from floral paneling in the beading works to the traditional Rajasthani Sangeri motifs on the main pillars. Constructed in 1878, this temple is known for its fine Jain architecture.
