Rickshaw tours: See Old Delhi like never before

Such pining for history we have. We want to experience the new as much as the old, know as much about our past as we want to peek into the future! Delhi, which literally lives in two eras with its Old Delhi-New Delhi distinction, is living testimony to that. Want to experience Delhi in its sepia-toned authenticity?

India City Walks, known for its travel-over-tourism concept that emphasises slow travel to pick up the essence of a place, has come up with their signature Rickshaw Tours, a fascinating way to explore the highlights of Old Delhi or Shahjahanabad, its heritage, monuments, eateries and places of significance. Alternatively, this tour is also provided by hotels and travel agencies. (Scroll to the end for details.)

The tour

Old Delhi is known for its small bylanes, routes that have seen incredible history, shops that have survived years of changes. It covers monuments like Jama Masjid, Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, Spice Market, Wedding Market, Silver Bazaar, Town Hall, Old Mansions, shrines and hidden wonders, by city explorers as the tour guides are called. These are people with stories, taking you through the town of old, of the lore that has been going around for 400 years! And you will only begin hearing these gems once you sit in the rickshaw.

The novelty

The word touring has, in recent times, been maligned as a futile exercise of viewing a city in its symbols – a selfie at Red Fort, we must remind you, does not qualify as knowing it. Rickshaw Tours in general, and the one provided by ICW in particular, cover a set route too. But their approach to it is entirely focused on local interaction. The guides are available in Hindi and English primarily. You are also encouraged to speak to locals and know the city in depth. Alternatively, if you want to visit a particular place, or stay longer at another, you only have to ask. They arent too rigid that way, and we happy about that.
Cost: Starts at Rs 3,000 per person and for additional services (e.g., a third language speaker), you may have to pay more
