Imagine a cafe where the owner and the cleaner take home the same salary. Seems unimaginable in today’s world, right? Well, trust Mr Amin Sheikh of Mumbai to make the impossible possible.
A physically abused kid who was brought up on the streets of Mumbai, he decided to give something back to the society. With an aim of helping the underprivileged, Amin Sheikh opened a cafe where there is no discrimination whatsoever, on India’s 70th Independence Day. He raised the money for this library cum cafe in a series of life-altering events.
What is Bombay to Barcelona?
A library cafe, it offers visitors the comfort of indulging in some peaceful reading while biting into sinful delicacies. They have a library corner where people can read books that others have donated. They have a simple Take One, Leave One policy. But you have to state the reason behind you recommending the book you’re donating. They also have a glass cupboard which has jewelry, handmade cards and paintings by street kids up for grabs.
What’s So Different?
The cafe is entirely run by volunteers. Another great thing is that they have employed kids from the Snehasadan NGO of Mumbai. All the people working earn the same amount of money, hence, the no discrimination policy. They also have a board outside with the names and contact details of people who are in need of employment. They only do so after testing them and running a full-fledged background check on them.
Life is Life, I am Because of You
After running away from home at a tender age, he spent most of his childhood at railway stations, stealing and begging. He was then helped by Sister Seraphine of Snehasadan at Dadar Station. Situations improved, and he started working for Eustace Fernandes. Later, as a Christmas wish, he asked for a trip to Barcelona. After realizing that there were absolutely no kids on the streets there, he thought of doing something to change India’s equation too. He then went on to write his biography, Life is Life, I am Because of You, which led to the capital for Bombay to Barcelona. He never forgets his annual trip to Barcelona since then.
